The Estria Foundation was asked to do a painting demo for the Malcolm X Jazz Festival hosted by East Side Arts Alliance in Oakland. Instead of performing the normal painting demo with spray paint, we let our high school volunteers from Met West High School brainstorm what could be done with no budget.
The result was surprisingly creative and colorful. Our young protege’s created an activity called the “Custom Can Creation Workshop,” where we could recycle all the empty spray cans we had in storage. By painting all the cans white, we created a new platform for participants to express themselves.
You can see from the results below that not only kids of all ages, but even adults enjoyed our creative workshop. Thanks to Oscar and Bryant for all your help! Thanks also to Tommy, Sergio, Peps & Dime from Visual Element & East Side Arts Alliance for allowing us to do this workshop. Over 200 cans were recycled and everyone got to take a little souvenir of custom can art home from this workshop!
