FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Estria Foundation Brings Graffiti Arts Festival
To Bay Area for National Finals

Oakland, CA – September 28, 2011 – Bay Area based arts organization, The Estria Foundation hosts the 5th Annual Estria Graffiti Arts Festival in the Bay Area from 10/6/11 – 10/811. The festival kicks off with The Can Film Fest, premiering “Bomb It 2” on Thursday 10/6 at the Roxie Theatre in San Francisco. On Friday, 10/7 in downtown Oakland, SMSHBX Gallery hosts an art show featuring work from the organization’s international #WaterWrites Mural Series, and the past five years of graffiti battles. That same evening (10/7), Pecha Kucha Night; “Women Creating Public Art” at Oaksterdam University will feature women muralists, street and graffiti artists, sharing their photos. All of these events lead up to The Graffiti Battle Finals on Saturday 10/8 at DeFremery Park, where 20 artists from across the country will compete. This past summer, top graffiti artists from New York, Los Angeles, and Honolulu battled to enter the finals, and it’s now time for the best of the best to be crowned King or Queen.

“It is our fifth year cultivating the graffiti festival and competition throughout the United States. We’re excited to see the creativity of the writers elevate to the next level, and encourage those competing to make statements through their art. We want to highlight that the artists competing in these battles earn the titles “King” and “Queen” because they are also the role models that inspire under-served youth.” – Estria Miyashiro, Founder of The Estria Foundation

The Battle is hosted in partnership with Life is Living Festival; an all day free community and family-friendly event with a focus on environmental sustainability. Youth are welcomed to participate in a Blackbook Graffiti Battle, a t-shirt stenciling workshop, enjoy performances and help power the generator for the “Pedal Powered Stage”. Along with these public events, The Estria Foundation will also provide one day graffiti art workshops to several East Bay High Schools. Students will get to create art projects with the competing finalists. Battle Finalists Include: Doves (NY), Meres (NY), Woier (LA), Level (LA), Katch (HI), Ckaweeks (HI), and Vyal (2010 King), who will be defending his title.

This year The Estria Foundation has gained enormous support from arts institutions including The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and The Honolulu Academy of Arts.

About Life Is Living: LIFE is LIVING has grown from a festival that uses art to foster environmental justice to a mobilized campaign much larger in scope. Highly successful LIFE is LIVING events have taken place in Harlem, Chicago, and Houston with further work proposed for Philadelphia, San Francisco, and the Twin Cities. The campaign includes a traveling environmental caucus & concert, live action sports, sustainable materials construction projects, and a Speak Green youth poetry event. As we reflect the voices of an emerging cultural majority, we recognize that our arts practices must echo and sustain the lives of the communities we engage. www.lifeisliving.com
