Estria Battle NY Artist Profile: SADE TCM

Not only has SADE TCM contributed to the NYC Subway Bombing Movement, but he’s also painted with NYC legends, and has perfected traditional funk-style lettering. This year, he’ll be going from Subway cars to canvas at the 2011 Estria Invitational Graffiti battle.

How did you become involved with graffiti?
I started writing in 1979 and started getting up on the trains in NYC in 1981.

How would you describe your own personal style and how did you develop it?
My style comes from every NYC subway writer I idolized before me. I would say I have some PART mixed with STAN ONE TS5 mixed with some SKEME, mixed with DUSTER, with a little CRASH and DAZE and some SEEN UA and SEEN TC5…I would say I’ve managed to progress while still maintaining the essence of old school NYC funk style from the IRTs!

How is your work translated into community work?
have not done a lot of community work. Several times I have been invited and particpated in teaching art workshops.

What are your thoughts on the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle? Who do you see as your greatest competition?
All of the artists are my greatest competition, I am awed by all of the talent that is coming to the table for this one.

If you could create your own Montana can, what color would it be and what would you call it?
My Montana can would be SADE TCM BLUE (Sort of like Krylon old school True Blue, it covered the best on dirty trains! My favorite!!
