As the 5Pointz gallery curator, MERES ONE is clearly a highly-seasoned graffiti artist who sees his greatest competition as himself. We sat down with this graffiti veteran to capture his thoughts on the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle-NY:
How did you become involved with graffiti?
I became involved with graff in the late 80′s. I first noticed a smurf that was painted in the park near my house..from that moment on, I started paying attention to the walls and the tags on them.
How would you describe your own personal style and how did you develop it?
I think my style has a New York foundation with a futuristic twist to it. I try to stay innovative and at the forefront of graffiti- constantly pushing my boundaries.
How is your work translated into community work?
I love to work with the youth and have done several community and school projects. Art is the strongest means of communication.
What are your thoughts on the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle? Who do you see as your greatest competition?
I feel the Estria Battle will force all the artists to push their boundaries. My greatest competition is myself. I am always trying to out do myself.
If you could create your own Montana can, what color would it be and what would you call it?
Creating my own montana color….hmmmm thats a tough one. I have no favorites.
